Identifying Appropriate Surrogate for Gunung Leuser Priority Species by Using their Characters and Distributions: A Review

Abstract Gunung Leuser National Park (GLNP) priority species is a surrogate representing four wildlife, Panthera tigris sumatrae, Dicerorhinus sumatrensis, Elephas maximus sumatrensis , and Pongo abelii living within GLNP. GLNP was appointed based on the extinction status, endemicity, population habitat conditions, threat, regional representation of wildlife. “GLNP species” terminology considered from flagship species, keystone umbrella or charismatic species. This literature review aimed to clarify appropriateness other surrogates by comparing characters distributions definition identified five species: key-stone indicator are appropriate be two considerations: (1) all which endemic wildlife Sumatera critically endangered International Union for Conservation Natures’ status (2) condition periodically decreased (elephant rhino) threatened (tiger orangutan). Besides, tiger orangutan also can determined as considering their distribution spreads extensively covering area.
